Temporary ban imposed on Facebook in Pakistan

Facebook Banned in PakistanWorld’s largest social network Facebook again hit by another massive controversy on Wednesday. According to Pakistani officials, a Pakistan court has ordered the government to ban Facebook for the moment because of their recent provocative activities regarding posting pictures of the Prophet Mohammed on their site.

According to Azhar Siddique, a representative of the Islamic Lawyers Forum in Lahore High Court, the court has asked the government to wedge Facebook until May 31. Following this, The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority or PTA has instructed Internet service providers to block Facebook until further notification. Meanwhile the Foreign Ministry is also keeping an eye on the current situation and is expected to raise this issue in international level.

A Facebook community named “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day – May 20” which invited the viewer to participate in a competition to sketch pictures of the Prophet Mohammed, has inflamed in Islamic sentiments. According to Musllims, pottering of Prophet Muhammad is considered as a heinous crime. More than 200 of images with various poses has already been posted there and some of them have acutely made the situation worse. As a matter of consequences several protesters is rallying in roads of Karachi, reminds a similar situation created by a Danish newspaper on 2006.
