I just traded with a friend for an iphone and i think it’s the 3g. I like to jailbrake it and unlock to use t-mobile. I’ve read alot of blogs and youtube but still confused.

this is what i current have on the iphone.

version 3.1 (7c144)
model MB704LL
modem firmware 05.11.07

what are the steps i need to do to jailbrake it and unlock?

Some are saying i have to downgrade the firmware to 04.26.something and depending on the bootloader of 5.8 version. sounds like that is the only version that works for downgrade. this that correct?

Please advice.

Okay, I’ve not seen this problem. I followed the instructions…got the 1604 error, followed THOSE instructions, got the phone restoring and then BOOM! It shut down itunes and my phone. I can turn my phone on in DFU mode only but itunes wont work at all! It keeps giving me an error saying I need to reinstall itunes! Help!

I would like to try this, but I got the “official” 3.1 FW update, so the baseband is 05.11.07 . After reading the updated info, it’s not clear to me whether I will first need to downgrade to 3.0/3.01 FW, or if I will be able to jailbreak directly. Any ideas? At least for now, I want to keep ATT, only want to jailbreak so I can get a video recorder app! Please clarify whether FW downgrade will be necessary first.

didn’t work at all for me – everytime i try to jailbreak it it says the firmware isn’t compatible with the iPod…i don’t know what i’m doing wrong but i have an iPod 2G and iTunes 9 and something’s just not working :.(

I tried downloading the firmware, but everytime I try to extract the combined file, Win RAR says it’s corrupted. is there some better way to get these files?

My phone was 3g 3.0.1 Jailbroken. I restored with custom fw and it worked without any 16xx error. iTunes did not activate my phone after jailbreak(I Have AT&T) – so I had to unlock to be able to work on AT&T. I can’t get the carrier updated settings, so no MMS Custom 3.1 FW still works tho. (only if your phone was already jailbroken. It didn’t work for my wife’s unjailbreak iphone – got the 16xx errors)

I was able to fix it by downgrading my baseband. Everything is working now, except I don’t have the MMS update anymore

@Alex: I’ve had the exact same problem. The solution is easy: you just have to change the file extension. Here’s a guide on how to enable file extensions: maximumpcguides dot com/windows-7/show-file-extensions/
If you are on Vista or XP, it should be pretty much the same. If you still can’t figure it out, google “enable file extensions windows”

If you have AT&T and have already updated to 3.1 and upgraded your baseband then you need an unactivated firmware. This one is hacktivated so it won’t work with AT&T.
