   I am so burnt out on all of this! I am going on my 6th day of trying to work this all out and nothing works. I have downloaded so much software its not funny – is this just another version of people trying to rip other people off? I have no problem doing this myself – but NOTHING is working and I am disheartened.

   I tried to do the restore both in DFU mode in iTunes 9 and just in regular mode. In DFU mode, I got the 1601 error and it just rebooted my phone and it hand’t changed anything. In the regular mode, I got the 1604 error and had to the Restore and Update to get it working again.

   Is there anything I am missing?

    yeah, I upgraded recently.
    I tried this one and now successfully running 3.1
    I did observe certain battery improvements and signal levels were similar to 3.0
    Wifi get bit better.

    i finally got all 3 parts downloaded and i joined then together using HJ Split with no errors however when uncompressed the new single file I get a corrupt file error. I have to start from scratch and download these three files all over again…what a drag. Hopefully they will work the second time around.

    Just managed to do it….secret id if you upgraded to 3.1 it wont work..you must downgrade back to 3.0 (which is the tricky part), follow http://www.redmondpie.com/downgrade-iphone-3.1-to-3.0.1/

    Jail break using redsn0w..then proceed as above..ive done mine and 2 friends phones ..no problems..

    Its a bit tricky , but i’m no IT wizard, just read the instructions and go for it….

    I dono what im doing wrong with mi iphone 3g, downgrade back to 3.0 succesfull but when im trying to jailbreak with custom fw get error 1604, 1602, firmware not compatible, etc … tried mor than 6 times with no success. using 3 kind of fw online available for this operation… damn

    To the naysayers, I just managed to successfully jailbreak my 3G 3.0.1 using the above method and software. My phone was previously JB’d with Redsn0w and unlocked with ultrasn0w. Hope that helped…PS if it generates errors try switching to another computer. It seems the process is dependent on your current Windows update status.

    After consulting a little bit here and there finally jailbreak on3.1 successful . Have to be clear and say if you have updated to 3.1 just downgrade back to 3.0 and jailbreak… THEN follow the instruccions posted on this site… That’s the way it work, so If you are on 3.1 you can’t do this , if you are on 3.0 but no jailbroken you can’t do this l, but if you have 3.0 and jailbreak first of all …. This will work like a charm… Thanks for your help

    Tp, make shure your device is previously jailbroken on 3.0 or 3.0.1 then restore with custom restore, to restore you don’t need to get DFU mode on your device just select your device, shift – restore- pick the custom restore and enter

    worked like it should.
    didn’t like 3.1 so i downgraded it to 3.0 without any problems using itunes 9 and then just unlocked it with redsnow.

    I can’t join the files (2G) cuz the first one (unlike the other 2) is named “…zip.001.zip”. There’s one “.zip” too many, therefor it isn’t recognized by HJSplit as a .001 file. I unfortunately can’t unzip it because 7zip doesn’t recognize it either. I can#t even manually change it to “…zip.001″ (delete the last .zip) because I’m on Windows 7 and I dunno how to do it.
    Can anyone help me with this?

    just finished my update i accidently did it through itunes first then downgraded jailbroke with redsn0w then just restored it with the custom firmware built with the pwnage tool then restored with itunes 9 using the custom firmware and had to wait a lil while for it to finally go thought it was froze at the (preparing iphone for restore) box but just took awhile…. All in all it works i did it.

    Stupid question. I have a iPhone 2G thats stuck in emergency mode and how can I tell what version firmware I have so I can downgrade and restore to a version I can jailbreak. I just want to be able to use it as a iTouch. I dont care about service. I think the person I bought it from upgraded it to 3.1

    Have the person you bought the iphone from or anyone else with an iphone plan insert their sim card and “Activate” the phone but don’t let itunes sync- the backed up data. I’ve done this with a few friend’s 3Gs in the past and it works like a charm.

    It’s possible you may have initially upgraded to the officail 3.1 fw which would of updated the baseband to 05.11.07. If so, utraSn0W will not work and until there is a work around to downgrade the baseband you are pretty much out of luck. If your baseband is 04.26.08 then ultrasn0w should work.

    Yes, I upgraded to official 3.1. Then downgraded to 3.0 and followed steps above.
    Finally I am back on 3.0

    Demirci,if you are on 3.1 already , you have to downgrade to 3.0 or 3.0.1 and jailbreak, then restore via iTunes with custom restore 3.1 and you will be up to date and remain jailbreak… Enjoy!!

    If you have AT&T and have already updated to 3.1 and upgraded your baseband then you need an unactivated firmware. This one is hacktivated so it won’t work with AT&T.

    @Alex: I’ve had the exact same problem. The solution is easy: you just have to change the file extension. Here’s a guide on how to enable file extensions: maximumpcguides dot com/windows-7/show-file-extensions/
    If you are on Vista or XP, it should be pretty much the same. If you still can’t figure it out, google “enable file extensions windows”

    My phone was 3g 3.0.1 Jailbroken. I restored with custom fw and it worked without any 16xx error. iTunes did not activate my phone after jailbreak(I Have AT&T) – so I had to unlock to be able to work on AT&T. I can’t get the carrier updated settings, so no MMS Custom 3.1 FW still works tho. (only if your phone was already jailbroken. It didn’t work for my wife’s unjailbreak iphone – got the 16xx errors)

    I would like to try this, but I got the “official” 3.1 FW update, so the baseband is 05.11.07 . After reading the updated info, it’s not clear to me whether I will first need to downgrade to 3.0/3.01 FW, or if I will be able to jailbreak directly. Any ideas? At least for now, I want to keep ATT, only want to jailbreak so I can get a video recorder app! Please clarify whether FW downgrade will be necessary first.

    Okay, I’ve not seen this problem. I followed the instructions…got the 1604 error, followed THOSE instructions, got the phone restoring and then BOOM! It shut down itunes and my phone. I can turn my phone on in DFU mode only but itunes wont work at all! It keeps giving me an error saying I need to reinstall itunes! Help!

    I just traded with a friend for an iphone and i think it’s the 3g. I like to jailbrake it and unlock to use t-mobile. I’ve read alot of blogs and youtube but still confused.

    this is what i current have on the iphone.

    what are the steps i need to do to jailbrake it and unlock?

    Some are saying i have to downgrade the firmware to 04.26.something and depending on the bootloader of 5.8 version. sounds like that is the only version that works for downgrade. this that correct?

    Please advice.

    Use the provided custom firmwares for iPhone 2G above and it will jalbreak and unlock your iPhone.
